Enjoy the winter beauty of Scenic State Park with us! We are pleased to announce our roster of events for the 2012 Winter Challenge below:

  • 4.5 mile (7.2 k) Classic ski loppet - Start time 1:30 p.m.

  • Skate ski relay race on Coon Lake - Start time 2:30 p.m. Form your group of 4 team members (co-ed encouraged) or request a team placement.

  • Hockey clinic - NEW! Learn hockey skills. 1:00-2:00 p.m.

  • Ice dive - Itasca County Search & Rescue members conduct a demonstration dive through the ice, starts at 12:00 p.m.

  • Fishing clinic - Back by popular demand! Sponsored by the Minnesota DNR (not a contest) 1:00-3:00 p.m.

  • Open skate ice skating - A limited number of skates in different sizes will be available for use, 12:00-1:00 p.m.

  • Smoosh racing - NEW! Bring your own or use provided smoosh skis (2x4s). 2:30-3:30 p.m.

  • Chili, soup, hot drinks and the fixin's PLUS s'mores around the campfire or fireplace. Freewill donation.

ALL participants will receive a Winter Challenge beanie while supplies last. Race participants will receive a 2012 race pin. Classic ski loppet overall men's and women's first, second and third place finishers will receive trophies; skate ski relay race trophies to winning team.

Entry fees: Entry fees: Classic Ski Loppet $10 ages 16 and over, Skate Ski Relay Race $10 per team. All other events and youth ski entries 15 and under are FREE.

Trail and park passes: Bigfork Valley will again sponsor daily ski passes and vehicle state park daily passes this year for those who do not already have one. Entry to the park is FREE for participants.

Registration: All participants must sign a registration form. To register online via credit card or PayPal please click here. You may also download the registration form, complete and bring it to the registration table at Scenic State Park or register right at the park. See you there!

Cancellation: In the event that the Winter Challenge has to be cancelled due to adverse weather conditions we will post the cancellation notice on the website or you may call the event coordinator at 218-743-4338 for further information.

The Bigfork Valley Challenge events are designed to provide an opportunity for people to learn about and participant or compete in life sports and activities that can improve fitness, health and quality of life. Other Challenge events in 2012 include the Kids Challenge and Challenge Races; half marathon, 10k run and 5k run/walk.
